The dancing that the Can Can girls did, because of its very high kicks, exposed much of the legs as well as petticoats, which was considered quite scandalous during this time period where typical women’s fashion covered the body from head to toe. Black fishnet stockings were often worn and associated with the Can Can girl as well. Red, which was considered a taboo color by ‘proper’ ladies, was of course, a favorite color worn by these entertainers and dancers as well.
Fishnet stockings today are favored by trendy women for many reasons, in and out of the bedroom, but still have retained the heavy sexual association that was afforded them in their somewhat bawdy beginnings.
