The corset has been a utilitarian undergarment used by women for hundreds of years. The purpose of the corset was to contort the female form into the fashion dictates of the day. Stiff fabric or boning was often used in the construction of the corset, along with laces in the back that could be cinched up tightly. This structure enabled the garment to hold the woman’s body firmly into the shape dictated by the corset. The quest for the perfect hourglass female figure has taken many directions and some of the ramifications of being a slave to fashion have been rather extreme. The whims of fashion sometimes caused women to temporarily take leave of their senses as they tried to mold their body into a tiny little (and very uncomfortable) corset that was likely several inches too small. Realistically, a good corset could only shave an inch or two off a woman’s waistline, but certainly that didn’t stop many a female from trying to go further--the reward being a waistline that was absurdly small, but coveted by many in those days of yesteryear. In the 16th century, it was rumored that Katerina de’ Medici, the Queen of France, required all her ladies in waiting to have a 13” waist. This excessively small waistline defies all reason, but it was a coveted fashion trend in that historical era. It’s no wonder that many medical issues were attributed to extremely tight corset use, including curvature of the spine, rib displacement, hunchback or sometimes they simply caused a woman to faint. It wasn’t uncommon for women to carry smelling salts on their person in case they suffered from a fainting spell brought on by an overly tight corset.
In today’s day in age, the corset (thankfully) is rarely worn as it was in days gone by. Today’s corset is considered to be sexy, sophisticated, and beautiful-- and is really quite wearable, without pain, thank you! Pop stars such as Madonna invented the trend of wearing ‘underwear’ as ‘outerwear’ and the corset remains a seductive and long-standing favorite lingerie item that is fun to show off in a way where it definitely can be seen on the outside.
