As far back as the historic era of Ancient Egypt, women have understood the allure of the chemise. Women of Ancient Egypt would wear form-fitting tubular shaped dresses made out of a sheer linen fabric and construct them so that the dress would drape elegantly over their bodies. The dress would sometimes be held onto the shoulders with some sort of straps. Using the wisdom of the ancients, the dresses often came to just below the breasts, leaving the entire bosom area exposed which was not considered immodest in the least during this historic time period.
By definition, the chemise is basically an unwaisted garment that flows freely from the shoulders. Although initially worn as an article of clothing, during the Middle Ages the chemise evolved into what was primarily used an undergarment. The chemise, which once was worn as a tunic by the Roman’s, now was worn underneath gowns or robes for women, or with trousers of some sort for men. In the days of yesteryear the chemise was sometimes the only article of clothing that was actually laundered as it was worn right next to the body.
The Chemise of today is a far cry from the staple undergarment worn by our forefathers. Primarily a lingerie item in today’s fashion world, the chemise is considered both sexy as well as comfortable. With it’s easy, flowing styling it is also flattering to many different figure types. Depending on the fabrication used, the chemise can be flirty, elegant or drop dead sexy--only you can decide what direction you wish to take your lingerie adventure. No matter which style you choose, you will be sure to want to add the easy flair of a chemise to your intimate wardrobe collection!
